Do You Want a Job You Love? Learn How to Recognize and Pursue Your Passions in the Workplace

Have you heard the expression, “If you love your job, you’ll never work a day in your life?” First of all, we know that work is still work, and even the most amazing jobs can still give you a bad day here and there. But what this quaint expression really means is that if you can find a job that ignites your passion, even the worst of days give you a sense that you’re in the right place.

How can you find this passion and apply it to your job? Here are a few tips for finding, igniting, and then applying your passion to work to make something meaningful out of your 9 to 5.

Finding Your Passion

Life’s little requirements, like rent, groceries, and your student loans, may have sent you down a path where you’ve taken a job that doesn’t thrill you but pays the bills. You may even like elements of your job, but you’re not really engaged or passionate about what you’re doing. The keyword here is passionate. What are you passionate about and how can you turn that into meaningful work? You may have to go back to your youth to find out what you’re really passionate about but it’s an exercise that’s worth the effort.<
If you’re having problems figuring out what motivates and inspires your passion, eliminate money from the picture for a second. Here are some good questions to get you thinking about what you would do—if you could:

  • Would you spend all your time in the garden?
  • Maybe you’d start a non-profit to help pets?
  • Do you like helping people?
  • Are you handy with technology?

For just a moment, consider what you’d do even if finances weren’t just a pressing issue. What would you do? What kind of a career would you have? Who are your professional heroes and what do they do? Is there a career you always wanted to do but haven’t taken the plunge? There are all kinds of jobs in healthcare and IT, for example. Would a certification in these fields get you closer to the kind of work you might enjoy?

Ask your friends and family if you still can’t figure it out. Sometimes the people that know you the best can help you make big life changes that make you happier. Consider what you like to do but also what you do well. How can you combine the two?

Once you’ve figured it out, move on to the next step—applying your passion to work.
