Searching for and finding a job is hard. A recent study showed, on average, applicants applied for 10 to 15 jobs. Out of those applications, they were rejected between six and 10 times. The average applicant said they start to lose confidence in themselves after the fifth rejection.

If you’ve been struggling to find work, this blog will help you stay motivated.

Why is it so Hard to Stay Motivated During a Job Search?

There are several reasons why you can lose hope during a job search:

  • Receiving multiple rejections can shake the confidence of almost anyone.
  • The uncertainty of not knowing when you might find a job.
  • Finding a job is monotonous and labor-intensive, which can be demotivating.
  • Over time, you can start to doubt yourself and your skills.
  • You’re conducting your search in a vacuum, without any feedback beyond rejection letters.

For all these reasons, staying motivated and positive during your employment search is a job in itself. Yet you must stay engaged, vigilant, and, above all, motivated to keep putting yourself out there to potential employers.

Here’s what you can do to remain positive until you land the job you want.

How to Stay Motivated During a Job Search

Here’s how to keep a positive attitude during a tough job search:

  • First, set realistic goals. Make your goals measurable and achievable. For example, I will apply for two jobs every day until I find what I want.
  • Next, establish a routine to follow as you apply for jobs. Set up a spreadsheet to track the jobs you’ve applied to, the interviews you’ve attended, and so on. Set aside specific times each day to work on your job hunt.
  • Focus on self-care. This may seem counterintuitive—there’s so much to do to find a job! —but you must take care of your physical and mental health during a job search. Take time to exercise and get more sleep. Job hunting is stressful, which means you should practice more self-care during this challenging time.
  • Seek support from your network. Being without a job can be scary. Seek help in the form of contact with your friends and family. This will help you stay positive in the face of adversity. Consider joining a job search support group and look to your peers for guidance and encouragement.
  • Don’t forget to celebrate small wins. The truth is every rejection letter is one step closer to your dream job. Completing an application or going on an interview is worthy of some applause. Celebrate big and small wins to stay motivated.
  • Stay positive by focusing on your strengths and accomplishments. History is full of great entrepreneurs and innovators who received rejection after rejection until they succeeded. Take lessons from these stories and persevere!
