At the start of a new year, most people set health-related goals. One of the most frequent goals is to eat healthier, while 59% of Americans say they want to exercise more or lose weight (48%). These goals are consistently popular every year. Yet, on average, only around 12% of people are able to meet these goals. Perhaps that is because they’re dropping the goals due to work commitments. If you go into an office, it can be hard to keep up with your health-related routines. But this blog will give you some health tips designed perfectly for an office setting. With these tips, maybe you can be a part of the 12% that keep their New Year’s resolutions intact.

How to Stay Healthy in an Office

If you work in an office, it’s harder to keep up with your fitness goals. You may be tied to your computer for a set amount of time. Or your coworkers may love to bring in sugary treats. Maybe your boss likes to cater lunches. All these things can contribute to missing out on the health goals you’ve set for yourself. How can you stay healthy in your office? Here are seven tips:

  1. Get up and move around regularly: Set a timer or use a time-blocking methodology that forces you to get up and move around. Try to take a short walk or do some stretching at least every hour or so. The key to enforcing this routine is to add the exercise into your schedule so that nothing takes away from this time.
  2. Use a standing or a treadmill desk: Sitting consumes less energy than walking or standing. Research links too much sitting with obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and more. Consider using a treadmill or a standing desk to reduce the time you spend sitting.
  3. Take frequent breaks: Step away from your desk and take breaks throughout the day to help reduce stress and improve your overall well-being. Studies show these breaks are very beneficial to your work, sharpening your focus and increasing your performance. That’s in addition to the health benefits of reducing stress and increasing energy.
  4. Eat healthy: It’s hard to resist the homemade cookies your coworker brings in. We’re not saying you have to, either, but you should make an effort to eat out less at lunch and bring better snacks to the office. Avoid the office vending machine and any fast-food options.
  5. Stay hydrated: Did you know 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated? The water consumption recommendations vary by the level of exercise you receive, your health, and where you live. However, the latest general recommendations for fluid consumption are: 15.5 cups a day for men and 11.5 cups a day for women. So, make sure to drink plenty of water at the office to stay hydrated.
  6. Get more sleep: Americans are also chronically sleep-deprived. Good sleep is the foundation for health, affecting how we live and function every day. Most adults (70%) say they obtain insufficient sleep one night a month, and 11% say they don’t ever get enough sleep.
  7. Wash your hands: COVID taught us a lot about the importance of hand washing. Washing your hands regularly, particularly at the office, can keep you from picking up whatever is going around the office this week.
