Changing careers can be a fear-inducing event. You’re leaving the comfort of tasks you know and understand while also probably taking the plunge into a new company culture. The good news is: You’re not alone. Millions of people over the past year have left their careers for something new. How can you overcome your initial fear and switch careers? Here’s how to launch your new job search.

Why is Changing Careers So Scary?

The data shows that changing careers is one of the 20 top most stressful things to ever happen in your life. Of course, it is.

Additional Learning to Do

First of all, there’s a ton you probably have to learn. You may have to go back to school or pick up new credentialing. Maybe you sign up for an internship or a boot camp. Even if you don’t have to up the ante on your education, you still need to do the work to find a new job. Interviewing is a stressful proposition when you don’t have years of experience to back you up.

Financial Fear

The other fear may be financial. You may have to go back from your current salary for a little while to build your way back up the ladder in a new field. It can be scary to leave your current role to branch into a new field due to the financial insecurity of trying something new. What if you send out resumes and no one responds? What if you’re not really as good in this new job as you thought you were? Or maybe, you just hate it.

Now, we’re even kind of scaring ourselves, here.

Fear of Change

We don’t know if any of these things will be true for you. There’s just no way of knowing until you actually take the plunge and make a big career move. What we do know is that if you are unhappy in your current work you don’t have to be. The days of staying in the same career (which you probably hated) for 25 years and then retiring are certainly over. Across the U.S. people are taking the plunge and leaving their jobs—and we mean millions of people. Literally, more than four million people have consistently quit their jobs for the past six months.

We share this to let you know that you’re not alone.

Ironically, the fear you’re feeling actually has more to do with the fact that you are about to change your life. But how do you take that first step and how do you actually land a job?
